As a father, teacher, and administrator, I bring a unique view and experience of being a part of the FCPS BOE!
Since I have been in FCPS as an administrator, I have worked with all departments and I am knowledgeable about what is currently not working in FCPS and I am not afraid of asking questions about working to fix the issues.
We need to get back to a common-sense approach to how the school system is running and collaborate with all BOE members to focus on what is important.
I have the experience of participating in and chairing over 2000 IEP/504 meetings over my thirty years.
I have implemented the laws in COMAR and worked to make collaborative decisions regarding every student and family that crosses my path.
As a newly retired administrator, I know how the current FCPS policies and regulations directly impact the daily lives of educators, parents, and students.
FCPS creates an environment that makes navigating the IEP/504 process difficult for parents. The meetings need to be more collaborative and allow the parents to understand how the school system is going to support them during the entire process.
All three of my children have had an IEP or 504 and my family had to secure advocates and attorneys in order for my children to receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education in FCPS. I fully understand that it is not an option for most families and this is another reason the process needs to be changed.
After these stressful experiences, my family began advocating in front of the BOE for years to force a change in FCPS and at the state level to support the dyslexic population and provide the necessary professional development in evidence-based intervention.
